CLOACKING
DEVICE
Type : Romulan (from a D'Deridex Class Warbird) (specific model unknown) Number : 1 Range : The cloaking field envelops the hull of the ship itself to minimize subspace distortion. During warp flight, the cloak is extended to mask the warp field. |
Note
:
The
Treaty of Algeron bans all Starfleet vessels from having and using cloaking
technology.
However,
Defiant was given permission to use the cloacking device, in exchange for
whatever
information
Starfleet security had on the Dominion, Since the Romulans broke this
agreement
by attacking DS9, this agreement no longer exists.
(Starfleet
vessels are expressly forbidden to use a cloacking device in the Alpha
Quadrant)

COMPUTER
SYSTEMS
Type
:
The
two main computer cores incorporate a new technology, Reflex Quintronics.
It
is a combination of Duotronic Drivers, Isolinear Chips, Bio-Neural gel
packs,
and
the incorporation of a breakthrough in Cytherian technology.
This
gives the computer and optical data network a sort of bio-will,
which
allows it to respond to external stimulae on an instinctive level,
according
to its programming. If the ship is damaged,
the
computer automatically senses it through the ODN network (like a nervous
system)
and
immediately sends commands to the appropriate systems to repair it,
while
at the same time notifying the bridge.
However,
the computer's actions can be directed by the crew, but when the computer
is fully automated,
it
treats the ship almost as a living organism and the crew as the brain.
Reflex
Quintronics does NOT give the computer the ability to make independent
decisions;
the
computer consults with its programming and the options placed inside it,
weighs all alternatives,
and
chooses the best course of action, while notifying the bridge of what it's
doing.
The
computer can be overridden by the crew at any time.
Number
: 2 (both occupy space far astern on each side of the ship)
Memory
Capacity :
The
two cores are identical in every way;
micronization
and Cytherian advances have made these computers super-powerful.
Total
memory capacity for one core is 4,620,890,000 kiloquads,
which
is three times more memory than an isolinear computer core on a Galaxy
class starship.
Total
memory of both cores put together is 9,241,780,000 kiloquads.
Transmission
Speed :
FTL
elements in the cores allow for transmission of data at unprecedented speeds,
and since Reflex
Quintronics
works as instinct, the ship literally transmits with the speed of thought.
Standard
cruise mode transmission rate is approximately 423 billion times the speed
of light,
which
is about 63,000 kiloquads/sec.
Alert
situations have the computer working harder and faster,
and
the fastest transmission rate recorded is approximately 645 trillion times
the speed of light,
or
728,000 kiloquads/sec. Needless to say,
PADDs
and special consoles have been constructed to take as much advantage of
this
undreamt-of power as possible.
WARP
PROPULSION SYSTEMS
Drive
Type : Prototype Micronized Warp Core
note:
Defiant
is the first starship to use a warp engine for FTL travel without dilithium
crystals.
A
new substance was found in the Gamma Quadrant recently ago,
a
crystal which was non- reactive to antimatter when subjected to megawatt-level
high
frequency electromagnetic fields, making it "porous" to antihydrogen, which
is what dilithium does.
However,
new elements in the matrix formula of the crystal seem to amplify the reaction
of deuterium
and
antihydrogen when they interact on the crystal.
This
creates substantially more power and stronger warp fields.
The
element has been officially named "Keltrinium", after the Trill scientist
who discovered it.
This
crystal cannot be synthetically produced; it must be mined on the planets
where it is found,
refined
into a warp crystal, and installed into a starship's M/ARA (Matter/Antimatter
Reaction Assembly).
This
has allowed the basic warp core design to be micronized,
and
less fuel can be stowed on Defiant because it is now more potent.
Also,
it has been found that this element seems to affect the plasma used to
generate the warp fields,
causing
them to not "pollute" the space-time continuum.
Special
Note :
Incredibly
high warp speeds (in excess of warp 9.95) bring the Tau factor into effect,
which is "time dilation".
The
faster you go, the more subjective time slows down.
And
although Newtonian physics do not apply to subspace, they do apply to the
fields that generate subspace.
Therefore,
one second of stress on a warp field becomes an eternity of stress at warp
9.95+
because
time slows down, but the stress remains the same.
Therefore,
delta isotopes are injected into the M/ARA to mix with the warp plasma.
Delta
isotopes are dangerous to humans,
but
have been observed to have an effect on the temporal stability of this
dimension.
The
isotopes are modulated to compensate for the amount of time Defiant loses
at high warp,
thereby
"pulling" the ship forward in time to keep up with the present.
IMPULSE
SYSTEMS
Drive
Type : Standard Defiant Class mass drivers, fusion engines comparable
to Nebula class
Number
: 2
Output
:
Each
engine can propel the Defiant at speeds just under .75c, or "three-quarters
impulse".
Full
impulse is .993c (one tenth away from 186,282 miles per second, which is
warp one),
and
requires both engines working at approximately half strength.
Standard
impulse operations are limited to .25c, with each engine working at .125c.

2 at ventral midships

: Standard Defiant Class magnetohydrodynamic gas-fusion thruster

: Each thruster quad can produce 6.3 million Newtons of exhaust
DEFLECTOR
SYSTEM
Type
:
The
Defiant's shield system is unique in Starfleet.
It
is multi-layered, which means it is composed of several static shield layers
nested closely together
(similar
to asymmetrical peristaltic field manipulation, or warp fields),
five
meters out around the entire hull of Defiant.
The
outermost shield layer is classified, except for one fact which can be
disclosed:
it
manipulates graviton polarity in a way not typical to shields.
The
middle layer incorporates automatic rotation of frequency and nutation,
which absorbs enemy fire,
spreads
it out along the shield, and redirects it into space.
This
shield sends data on what type of weapon is used on it, and what frequency
and phase the weapon uses.
Once
this is analyzed by the tactical officer,
the
shield can be configured to have the same frequency as the incoming weapon,
but different nutation,
which
dramatically increases shield efficiency.
The
innermost shield layer is still being tested, and is highly classified,
but
what can be disclosed is that it is a multi-phase holographic shield,
which
is designed to not only be considerably more protective across a wider
range of the EM spectrum,
but
also take the energy from incoming enemy fire and use it to generate a
fake holographic sensor "ghost",
which
would confuse enemy sensors.
Range
:
The
shields, when raised, stay extremely close to the hull to conserve energy.
The
innermost shield is five meters away from the hull,
and
each consecutive layer is three meters further out.
Output
:
Each
shield layer takes its power directly from the warp engines and the impulse
fusion generators,
and
is augmented by the energy from enemy fire.
There
are sixteen shield grids on Defiant, and during Alert situations, each
shield generates 3219 MW,
resulting
in nearly 10,000 MW of shield power.
Because
of this, some shield energy is usually siphoned off to the phasers,
but
the total output of all three shields added together will never dip below
4,500 MW.
The
shields can protect against approximately 35% of the total EM spectrum
-
(whereas
a Galaxy class starship's shields can only protect against about 23%),
made
possible by the multiphase technology incorporated into the shields.
